Kea Island is part of the Cyclades province and is located not far away from Athens. From the airport in Athens you first go to Lavrio (25 km), and from there it is only one hour by ferry boat to the island covering an area of 132 square kilometres. At the northwest side of the island you will find the port of Korissia (Gulf St. Nicholas) which is one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean area.
In Ioulida, the capital of the island, remember to walk around the narrow network of stone-made streets. If you do not have a mean of transport, you can take a taxi or use the local buses taking you to beaches and sights. We do suggest to rent a car though in order to take full advantage of the island. Although Kea is a small
island, there are many sights to visit as the island has important history and great culture. In Ioulida you can visit the archaeological museum hosting finds from excavations in prehistoric settlements, finds from the historic times, and parts of the ancient temple of the ancient city Karthaia.
In Korissia you will surely notice the 45 m tall chimney made of bricks, which marks the old enamel factory, the largest enamel factory in the Mediterranean area. A few beaches on Kea are organized with tourist facilities, such as Gialiskari, Koundouros and Korissia. The rest of the beaches are small and secluded, ideal to enjoy privacy and isolation. From Kea you can visit a variety of Greek islands depending on boat schedule such as Kythnos, Syros, Paros, Naxos, Ios, Sikinos, Folegandros, Kimolos, Milos, and Tinos.
